Oxygen Concentrator Rental vs Buying in Pakistan

11/4/2026

Renting an oxygen concentrator may suit a short or uncertain period of prescribed use; buying may suit a longer-term need when the full ownership cost and support arrangements make sense. Compare written quotes for the same suitable model before deciding. The lower first payment is not always the lower total cost.

This guide is for families comparing equipment costs and arrangements in Pakistan. It does not determine whether someone needs oxygen, which capacity they need or how to set a device. Use the equipment requirements prescribed by the treating clinician. The NHS home oxygen guidance explains why oxygen should only be used when prescribed.

Start with the equipment requirement

Before requesting prices, have the prescribed equipment requirements available. Ask the supplier to identify the exact make, model and condition being quoted. A 5-litre and a 10-litre unit are not interchangeable simply because both are called concentrators; your clinician determines the required therapy, and the supplier should confirm the selected model meets that requirement.

Compare the published oxygen concentrator models and use the oxygen equipment page for rental and purchase enquiries. Confirm the specific unit available rather than assuming that every listed model is offered on both terms.

Renting versus buying: what changes?

Changing requirementsAsk whether a change of model is possible and how it is charged.Ask about exchange terms before purchase; do not assume an exchange is included.

When rental may be worth considering

Rental can be useful when the clinician expects to review the need, the likely duration is uncertain, or the household wants to avoid the full purchase payment at the start. It also gives you a defined point at which to reconsider the arrangement. It does not automatically mean maintenance, accessories or delivery are free.

Ask what happens if use extends beyond the first period. Check whether a partly used period is charged in full, how much notice is required for collection and whether rental continues until the supplier receives the unit. These terms can change the comparison substantially.

When purchase may be worth considering

Buying may be practical when the expected need is longer term and the household can budget for the machine, accessories and servicing. A purchase quote should identify the model and condition, provide an invoice, and explain the warranty and service route. Ask who to contact if a fault occurs and what costs may remain payable.

Ownership does not remove the need for support. Consider access to approved maintenance, the cost and availability of replacement parts, and what your household would do if the equipment needed repair. Do not base the purchase decision on a promise that the machine will never need attention.

Compare the total cost over the same period

Request a complete rental quote and a complete purchase quote for the same model and expected period. Use these simple worksheets:

  • Rental expense: rental charges for the expected period + delivery + collection + non-refundable setup, accessory and other quoted charges.
  • Purchase expense: purchase price + delivery + required accessories + servicing and consumables expected during that period.
  • Cash needed at the start: include any refundable rental deposit separately. A refundable deposit affects the amount you need available, even when it is not ultimately an expense.

If the rental period is uncertain, compare more than one duration. Do not subtract a possible resale price unless you have a credible basis for it. Ask which costs would remain if you ended the rental early or changed the model. This guide does not publish a fixed Pakistan-wide rental rate: current prices and terms depend on the actual quote.

Check power, support and handover arrangements

Ask the team to demonstrate the supplied unit, explain the user manual and identify the support contact. Confirm the accessories included and the cleaning and maintenance instructions for that model. For a rental, ask how the unit is prepared between users and what checks are documented before handover.

Power planning matters whichever payment option you choose. The Philips EverFlo user manual, for example, describes power-failure alarms. Ask the treating team and supplier to agree a suitable backup plan; do not assume the selected concentrator has a battery or that an ordinary household backup supply is compatible.

Keep oxygen equipment away from smoking and open flames, and follow the device instructions and clinical team's safety advice. Buying or renting changes the payment arrangement, not the prescribed therapy or the need for safe use.

Questions families often ask

Is renting always cheaper?

No. The answer depends on duration and the complete charges. Compare costs over the same period and check what happens if the rental is extended.

Does a rental payment automatically count towards buying?

Only if the supplier explicitly offers that arrangement in writing. A standard rental should not be assumed to be a rent-to-own agreement.

Should I choose a larger machine because the rental price is similar?

Use the prescribed equipment requirements. Price or capacity alone does not determine which device is suitable.

What should I send with an enquiry?

Share the equipment or model required, expected duration, delivery area and date. Discuss clinical documents privately with the relevant team when needed rather than posting patient information publicly.

Ask for comparable rental and purchase quotes

Contact Respiratory Zone to confirm the model available, the complete rental or purchase price, what is included and delivery arrangements. Having both quotes together makes the decision easier to review with your family.
